Map Explorer Accessibility

This accessibility statement applies to the interactive map platform available at:
https:// hasp.ac.uk/maps

We are committed to ensuring this map platform can be used by as many people as possible, including users with a range of access needs. This means meeting the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No.2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 and conforming to WCAG 2.2 Level AA, the required standard for UK public‑sector digital services.

How Accessible This Platform Is

The map platform is built using ArcGIS Experience Builder, which is designed to follow WCAG 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 AA standards and the Revised Section 508 requirements.
Experience Builder supports:

  • Keyboard navigation for page layouts
  • Alternative text for images
  • Suitable colour contrast

However, some parts of the map platform are not fully accessible:

  • Complex map interactions (dragging, panning, zooming) can be difficult for keyboard‑only or screen‑reader users. This is a recognised accessibility challenge for interactive map technologies.
  • Dynamic or layered map content may not be readable to screen readers.
  • Maps are classed as partially exempt under UK regulations, but any essential information contained within them must be provided in an alternative format.

Non‑Accessible Content

The content listed below is non‑accessible for the following reasons:

1. Non‑compliance with WCAG 2.2 AA

  • Some map controls cannot be fully operated using a keyboard.
  • Screen‑reader users may not be able to interpret geographic layers.
  • Colour contrast in some embedded map symbology is controlled by underlying datasets and may not meet contrast requirements.

2. Exempt Content

Under UK rules, online maps are exempt from full accessibility, but accompanying essential information must be made available in an accessible form (e.g., tables, lists, narrative text).
As the map platform only displays HASP’s open data, accessible alternatives to the information provided by the maps are available via the HASP data catalogue (https://data.hasp.ac.uk)
