The updated Nutrient Profile Model Calculator is now available via the Healthy and Sustainable Places Data Service.

The Nutrient Profile Model Calculator, developed by Dr Vicki Jenneson, is a free, transparent, and easy-to-use tool designed to help users calculate Nutrient Profile Model (NPM) scores—without requiring prior expertise in nutrition or food regulations.

The calculator is now accessible on our website, and we’ve updated it with more features, including a multiple products assessment.

Try the new calculator

The NPM Calculator and user guide can now be accessed on the Healthy and Sustainable Places Data Service website.

Learn more about the project and watch our how-to videos to explore how the calculator functions and how it has been used across the UK to support efforts in product reformulation, as well as legislative implementation and evaluation for healthier food environments.

Providing new features

The refreshed version of the NPM Calculator comes with new features to make product assessment even more efficient:

  • Users can continue to use the calculator for single product assessments on the go (mobile)
  • You can also now upload a table to calculate the NPM scores for multiple products at once (desktop)
  • We also have an R package available for scalable use across larger datasets

The calculator also comes with a new look – we’ve moved the calculator over from its previous home at the Consumer Data Research Centre, and it is now available via the Tools and Resources page on the HASP website.

Why we created the NPM Calculator

There’s been a boom in food environment policy in the UK, with the Nutrient Profiling Model at the heart of much of the new legislation,” explains Dr Vicki Jenneson.

This includes:

  • Restrictions on product placement
  • Limits on TV and online advertising
  • Local authority outdoor advertising policies
  • Bans on multi-buy offers

“Whilst it’s fantastic to see this policy progress, it’s resulted in lots of new people being introduced to the NPM and left a lot of heads scratching to try and understand and implement it consistently.

That’s why I developed The NPM Calculator, as a free to use, transparent and consistent aid for calculating NPM scores, which doesn’t require prior expertise in Nutrition or Regulations.”
